About Us

Asian Health Services (AHS) was established to support Waitemata District Health Board's services to deliver culturally appropriate, accessible, responsive and effective services to our growing Asian migrant and refugee communities.

The service started off as a pilot project in 1999 exploring the health needs of Asian people within the Waitemata district. The results from surveys of Asian people and health professionals from North and West Auckland was finalised and launched in March 2001 (Ngai et al; 2001).


Our Vision

The aim of Asian Health Services is to improve access to healthcare service and improve patient experience and the health status for culturally and linguistically diverse Asian patients / consumers and their families within the Waitemata district by:

  • delivering services that are more responsive, accessible and culturally appropriate for the Asian population

  • collaborating with primary and secondary health services, NGOs, Asian communities, other stakeholders and partners to:

    • achieve better health outcomes

    • improve communication

    • reduce inequalities

    • remove cultural barrier

  • providing access to language appropriate resources and interpreters for Waitemata DHB healthcare professionals

  • providing cultural support for staff to improve their cultural awareness
